Portuguese legislation was the first to adapt to the EU Directive 95/46/CE, developed through the law for the Protection of Personal Information 67/98 of 26/10/98. Summary of obligations for owners of addresses in Portugal:

• Data treatment based on a lawful procedure, collecting only information needed for the declared purpose.
• Inform data holders on the data collecting, the entity responsible for data treatment, usage of the data, users of the data and access/modification conditions.
• Always allow data holders to access their data to let them correct, modify or cancel their information.
• Law forbids the use of the collected data for purposes other than those communicated at the time of its collection.
